Having lived in Thailand now for almost six years, I was ready for someplace a little different from the norm. It is difficult and in my opinion not a really wise idea to buy a house here so I choose to rent. My new house rents for less than an average apartment in the U.S.
There are some trials and tribulations involved, and one must be prepared for Thai style and customs, but the benefits far outweigh the problems. Here is a tour of my "new" home.......
The morning view of the mountains is great but the "sounds of nature" take a little getting used to. We have the call of the wild birds, roosters, frogs and god knows what insects. Pretty cool really.
Here is what this place is all about; the upper balcony!
The door leads to the previous viewed bedroom and the screened area is the steps down and entry to another bedroom. I had to close the half inch gaps left around all the screens so they would be effective, but now it is quite nice.
Here is where we usually eat dinner and do our entertaining. A glass of wine while watching the sun go down is great. I am sitting here now with my notebook writing this narrative....
Nothing but sky, mountains and the river.......
This is the same river that flooded a large part of Chiang Mai 3 years ago, but they say it only reached within about 6 feet of this house. Supposedly the other side of the river is lower and takes the brunt of any flooding. That flood was supposed to be the "worst in 40 years" so I am kind of playing the odds here........

This place is a little quirky in it's design and layout. On the front veranda is what I guess is someones idea of a hot tub....
Many houses are built raised off of the ground. Not only for flooding but it helps keep the house cool and also keeps unwanted critters out. The caretaker lived under here before we moved in........
It now makes a nice workshop and storage area. It is quite cool and usually has a nice breeze wafting through.
The only problem is that I can stand upright between the beems, but the beems are forehead height. I have hit my head so many times that if I don't suffer from a permanent concussion I will be amazed....
Next to the kitchen is my "office". I do have ADSL internet but it is very slow compared to U.S. standards. It is not possible to view many videos or sustain huge downloads. This is the other air conditioned room in the house, so I can hide here during hot season
