Having lived in Thailand now for almost six years, I was ready for someplace a little different from the norm. It is difficult and in my opinion not a really wise idea to buy a house here so I choose to rent. My new house rents for less than an average apartment in the U.S.
There are some trials and tribulations involved, and one must be prepared for Thai style and customs, but the benefits far outweigh the problems. Here is a tour of my "new" home.......
After a lot cleaning of old furniture, sorry I mean "antiques", some rearranging and moving in of my own furniture, it started to take shape.......
Mirrors replaced in the antiques and knobs and such added to the cabinets, a couple carpets to help hide some of the ugly and uneven tile, filled the gaps around the screens and voila!.....
........it starts to feel like home. I do have satellite TV although the programing is terrible and we get mostly repeats of old series and movies.
Note the window on the right. That goes to the downstairs bedroom. I guess so one can look out and see the view, a little strange.
The living area has ceiling fans but no air conditioning. This is because there is no glass in the windows................
Wood shutters can be closed and I hope to add some drapery soon. The window at the back of this photo looks into the kitchen. It has crank windows that can be opened and closed.........
This is what is called a "Thai kitchen" as opposed to a "Western kitchen" for you house hunters. Usually built as an add on at the back of homes so the smoke and smells do not permeate the living area. The windows have screens with no glass so there is a lot of ventilation. This should be interesting in the cold season as the wind really blows sometimes and temps do drop low enough in the evening and early morning where jackets are necessary.....
A few additions make it more to my style, above all a microwave.
Thai's usually use these gas burner stoves. Ovens are rare and only in the newer expensive homes. It's not like I will be doing any baking anyway. What you don't see is the propane bottle next to the cabinet. There are no natural gas lines in Thailand.
Three bedrooms, 4 baths (SMALL baths). Two upstairs and one down. The up stairs bedrooms have great views and adjoin the balcony. They DO have glass windows. The plan is to sleep upstairs in the cooler weather and down during the hot season as the downstairs bedroom is the only one with air conditioning.
We added new material to the screen and fixed a few other things. This upstairs bedroom we will use during the cool season and for guests....
